ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY, PHYTOCHEMICAL AND CHROMATOGRAPIC ANALYSIS OF ANDROGRAPHIS SERPYLLIFOLIA By Asha A. K. and Raghavendra M. P.

Abstract

Hexane, chloroform and methanol extracts of ethnomedicinal plant Andrographis serpyllifolia Rottler ex Vahl collected from Western Ghats, Karnataka was evaluated for antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Methanol extract revealed highly significant antibacterial activity against test pathogenic bacteria compared to other extracts. All the extracts were subjected to phytochemical analysis, whereas methanolic extracts was analyzed by TLC analysis. The results revealed the presence of a flavonoid and four terpenoids.  In addition, the MIC of the extracts was also determined.
