Abstract
This article aims to study the role of food subsidies on the beneficiary population of the state during the lockdown period. Government as a Protector of the weak or poorest of the poor have the responsibility to ensure equity in the distribution of food. Of course, it is the welfare function of the state. Rapid implementation agility and successful use of food grains subsidy programs complimented the proactive governance model positively impacting the lives of millions. The food security of most vulnerable population is likely to deteriorate further due to the pandemic. Lockdown in India set in, government announced it free food grains, cash payments to poor citizens. Several economies as well as campaigns have been arguing for universalizing the public distribution system in the present context. Aim of this study is to analyse the role of food grain subsidy program on the beneficiary population of the state.
