The fast-paced and continuous advancement of teaching methodologies and educational technologies has radically changed the very face of both teaching and learning in the 21st century, bringing about profound changes in how teaching is perceived and delivered. Teachers are increasingly required, more than ever, to naturally incorporate a wide range of digital tools in their teaching methodologies, promote a culture of innovation and acquire necessary competencies that closely reflect the fast-growing demands of digital natives who are brought up in a technologically advanced world. This paper extensively reviews the indispensable role of professional development in forming contemporary teaching methodologies, heavily emphasizing the value of continuous learning, digital literacy and innovative teaching competencies essential for being successful. The research, based on a wide-ranging review of available literature in the field, determines both challenges and opportunities available to educators in adapting to a continuous generation of new technologies in classrooms. The research is also seen to outline effective approaches that may be used to facilitate successful integration of these technologies. Further, research includes pertinent data concerning educator’s beliefs about professional development and its indispensable role in boosting digital abilities and teaching methodologies, in general.
