Stories of a Changing Earth: Ecology in Select Malayalam Literary Texts By Liby K. S. and Dr. Anej Somaraj

Abstract

As climate change, environmental destruction, and unsustainable development continue to reshape everyday life, literature has become an important space for understanding how these crises are experienced and resisted. This paper examines how selected Malayalam literary texts respond to ecological crises by exploring the relationship between nature, community, and resistance. Drawing on ecocriticism, postcolonial ecocriticism, and the concept of eco-precarity, it analyzes O. V. Vijayan’s The Legends of Khasak, Sarah Joseph’s Gift in Green, and selected poems of Sugathakumari. The ecological crises represented in these works are not simply about the loss of forests, rivers, or biodiversity; they also reflect the unequal effects of development, the displacement of communities, and the intersections of caste, gender, and livelihood. The paper suggests that these works not only document ecological loss but also imagine alternative ways of living with the natural world through care, collective memory, and resistance.

Keywords: Ecocriticism, eco-precarity, Malayalam literature, ecological resistance, postcolonial ecocriticism, environmental justice
